Cybersecurity is no longer a standalone IT function; it’s a boardroom issue that demands the attention of every department within an organization. This was the resounding message from a panel of top cybersecurity leaders at Gitex Global 2024.
The panel stressed the urgent need for a company-wide approach to cybersecurity, especially in the Middle East, where digital transformation is accelerating. They identified three high-risk areas that require immediate attention: credential management, vendor management, and patch management.
Credential Management: A Weak Link
Weak authentication practices continue to plague many organizations. The panel emphasized the importance of strong, unique passwords, multi-factor authentication, and regular access reviews to prevent unauthorized access.
Vendor Management: A Hidden Danger
As businesses increasingly rely on third-party vendors, the risk of data breaches and security vulnerabilities from external sources grows. Rigorous vendor risk management processes, including thorough security assessments and ongoing monitoring, are essential to mitigate these risks.
Patch Management: A Timely Task
Delayed patching can leave organizations vulnerable to cyberattacks. Automating patch management and prioritizing critical security updates is crucial to maintaining a strong security posture.
Collaboration: The Cornerstone of Cybersecurity
The panel highlighted the importance of collaboration both within organizations and across industries. Cybersecurity is not solely the responsibility of the IT department; it requires the involvement of every team, from legal and compliance to finance and HR.
“Cybersecurity must be at the core of every organization,” said Anas Mosa, Director of Information Technology at PIF Projects. “It’s a collective effort, and we need to ensure open communication and alignment across departments.”
AI: A Double-Edged Sword
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) introduces both opportunities and risks. While AI can enhance security capabilities, it also creates new vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can exploit.
“We are living in the hype of AI,” said Christian Reilly, Field CTO EMEA at Cloudflare. “As AI becomes more widespread, organizations will become smarter—and, inevitably, more vulnerable.”
A Proactive Approach to Cybersecurity
To navigate the complex cybersecurity landscape, Middle East organizations must adopt a proactive approach. This includes investing in advanced security technologies, fostering a culture of security, and staying informed about emerging threats. By prioritizing cybersecurity and collaborating across the organization, businesses can mitigate risks and protect their valuable assets.
