Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, Chairman of the UAE Cyber Security Council, has revealed that the country is currently repelling between 500,000 and 700,000 cyberattacks daily. This surge in activity, which tracks closely with heightened regional geopolitical tensions, marks a transition where AI has evolved from a supporting tool into the core engine of modern offensive cyber operations.
The anatomy of these threats has become significantly more complex, with state-linked actors and independent syndicates utilizing platforms like ChatGPT to automate reconnaissance and vulnerability detection. Beyond technical breaches, the UAE is seeing a rise in high-fidelity phishing campaigns and the use of deepfake technology to fuel disinformation. These AI-driven methods have lowered the cost of entry for attackers while increasing the speed and “human-like” persuasiveness of their social engineering attempts, creating a persistent challenge for traditional perimeter defenses.
In response to this industrial-scale threat, the UAE has accelerated the rollout of an integrated national defense framework anchored by a “zero-trust” security model. This strategy assumes that threats are already present within the network, requiring continuous verification for every digital interaction. The National Cyber Security Operations Centre has also been placed on high alert, utilizing advanced threat intelligence systems to share real-time security patches with government entities and critical infrastructure providers to ensure total service continuity despite the barrage.
“In times of tension, your awareness must be faster than phishing attempts, calmer than rumours and more precise than fabricated content,” stated Dr. Al Kuwaiti. He emphasized that while national systems are containing the vast majority of threats proactively, the ultimate success of the country’s defense rests on the vigilance of the individual. Residents are being urged to treat personal cybersecurity as a civic duty enabling multi-factor authentication, avoiding unverified links, and relying strictly on official channels to verify media that may be manipulated by AI-driven psychological operations.
As the UAE continues to position itself as a global hub for the digital economy, its ability to insulate its financial and energy sectors from these sophisticated incursions will be a key indicator of its long-term investment stability. The Council’s proactive stance combining nationwide crisis simulations with automated defensive AI suggests that Abu Dhabi is intent on staying one step ahead in a regional arms race that has moved decisively from the physical battlefield to the silicon chip.
